5 dolog, amit eddig rosszul gondoltál a gamerekről

What do you think about when I say video games? Shooting, time loss, expressionless faces? Yes, many people think this is the case with gaming, don't worry, but it's definitely more to it, when it comes to online gaming. As for me, it gave a lot to my life, I got closer to my brother (he was the reason why I tried gaming), I learnt english, gave me inspiration for photography, I even met some of my best friends in online worlds - this is why I thought we should talk about the misbeliefs of gaming! :)

(Let me point it out, right at the beginning, that this post is not about kids - even though I am not a psychologist, I'm not sure that this kind of gaming is as healthy or useful for a child, as it is for adults)

1. Minden gamer kocka!

1 Every gamer is a nerd

No, not all of them. For example, I'm the living example (along with some of my gamer friends), that I don't really know much about cartoon characters, animes, Marvel heroes (in fact, I haven't seen many Marvel movies either), and my IT knowledge is not totally perfect either.

2. A gamerek antiszociálisak.

Amikor azt mondom megvitatják, igen, élőszóról beszélek - a voice-over (amolyan tömegskype) programok kifejezetten hasznosak a gamer közösség számára.

2. Gamers are antisocial.

One of the biggest misconceptions of all about gamers, when we say, that they don't talk. They do, they just talk to each other, not you. I know, it seems quite misleading, that they are in their room/corner in front of their PC (or console), and they don't go out to meet 'real' people, but they interact a lot within the community they belong to. They can discuss basically anything that they are interested in, what happens in their lives, not only games. And when I say discuss, I mean they speak - voice-over softwares are great help for gamer communities to keep in touch.

Ezzel össze szerettem volna foglalni mindazt, ami általában a játékosok életmódját becsmérlő cikkekben/beszélgetésekben előfordul. :) )

3. Gamers live in the basement of their mom's house, they are overweight, don't have girlfriends and they swear all the time

I just wanted to summerize all the things people think about gamer lifestlye - wrongly. Of course, there has to be a base to this rumour, that they - WE - are like this, but it's quite wrong to think everyone is like that. You don't think, that everyone who goes to the gym are big, bald, muscular, dumb and generally frightening now, do you? No, of course not. Truth is, that the friends I made over my years of gaming, almost every single one of them focuses on their physical strength by working out regularly, they are either married, or having a relationship (if not, then they are just devilishly handsome to settle down, haha), very intelligent and have the general impression of being the right peson to hang out with (yes, I'm talking about you, gamer facebook friends, you are all awesome :) )

4. Gamers 'shoot' in games every day, and this makes them aggressive

No. Just no. On one hand, they don't 'shoot' all the time (there are other kind of games, that don't include shooting), and on the other hand, it only makes those people agressive who weren't in balance before gaming either (there has been a research about this as well a few years back), so not everyone is insane. :)

5. You can't learn anything from a game

Not true at all! Games are there for you to learn things you can't even imagine. At least, I didn't know before how much you can improve in various fields if you play an MMO (massively multiplayer online). It requires and develops your skills in economical analysis (auction house prices, analysing the market itself), sense of locality (especially map reading), and the most useful for me: coordination skills (if you haven't done before you don't even know how hard it is to coordinate 8-16 people simultanously - an excellent practice for real life situations). Not to mention language skills you can earn - I learnt a lot of english during my time of gaming, and I'm really thankful for that.

At the end, the only thing I would like to say is: Game On! Gaming is not a total waste of time, it's a good resting time for your body, and work for your brain - and you can marvel at the beautiful artwork of the virtual worlds you enter (and not to mention the outfits, which are especially nice! :) ) Moderation is important though: my personal experience is that time flies fast when you wander around, so I advise you to pay attention to the clock :)

This is an old thought I had in mind, took notes, and planned to write this for almost 8 months. In memory of a holiday in Sweden. :) (with a bunch of photos, that I took there, cause after all, I never shared these either :) )

In the past 2 years I've been to Sweden twice, even tho last year it was only pictures I shared about the fantastic natural environment. This year we stayed a bit longer in Marcus' parents' house, at home (what a beautiful word that now we can use for 3 different locations). Through these 3 weeks, I experienced some cultural training. I'm not less hungarian than when I left, not to mention, that I always miss the amazing hungarian dishes, with all their excessive spiciness (yum!) but I just have to write a post about what I learnt from the Swedish - feels like they know how to live life in a better way than I do. Or at least those swedes that I met - so in advance, I'd like to point it out, that it's only my subjective opinion, and I'm gonna only write about the actual effect that I observed and tried to learn.

1. What you call May in Hungary... That is very much August in Sweden, and autumn starts with 1st of September.

Of course every one of us knows, that in Sweden, it's colder, which is an awesome thing, if you go there to cool down from the 38 degrees you had in your own country during the summer. It's not 20 degrees though, more like 25, which is basically May in Hungary - so no wonder the plants behave like it was spring. The currant bush is about to get its fruits, lavender is happily getting its flowers, tomatoes haven't even started to get red, and lilas just stopped blossoming, when we left.
Last time nights were so hard for me, because it was so light (in june), this year with autumn coming days got so much shorter so fast that it makes me dizzy. It started to rain, leaves are falling, and the sky became uncomfortably gray, as my mother would say.

2. Mindennek meg van a joga a növekedéshez

...kivéve a mérhetetlen mennyiségű meztelencsiga-állománynak.

2. Everything has a right to grow

...except for the slug-colonies infecting the beautiful gardens eating off the leaves. But if you don't count the slugs, what I saw was that they respect their environment greatly. The thing, that they don't start panicking about having a giant pine in their garden (sorry, no idea what the english word is..), it's totally normal, just like not even thinking about cutting them down, even if it's a meter deep snow at winter. If you know me, you also know that it's really important for me. Cutting down trees, damaging our environment brainlessly is one of the most terrible things I can imagine. When I asked if they would worry about the tree damaging their house, they just said, that these trees were very strong and their usefulness is greater than the damage they could cause. In winter they save the driveway from too much snow, so it's easier to clean, and in summers it gives shade (yes, 25 degrees counts as hot :) )

3. If you don't want something, you don't have to do it

There are unavoidable tasks, that you have to do, no matter what, of course, I'm not talking about these things. I think about things that you would do it for someone else's pressure, for example: have you ever bought a dress that you didn't like but someone else said it was perfect for you? This is what I'm thinking about. These situations usually turn out to be not really important, when you are surrounded by swedes - if you don't like something, just say so, they will just see it that you are different from them, and that is fine.

4. The art of acceptance

I've been struggling with anxiety because of the opinions of others about me, so much that it can worsen my quality of life. When I'm not with my family, I can feel really bad about myself, constantly looking who is looking at me at the moment. There's a new place where I can just be myself without having to worry too much. Everyone has their own flaws, and the fact that I can't do some things easily usually goes with a casual wave of 'who cares, get over it'. When I was in Sweden the usual answers were 'you are not alone' or 'it's not that important, you have time to do it' or 'well, it's not the most important thing in life'. By that I mean that while I'm struggling with general acceptance even from my friends, it's not what's happening when I'm around my swedes. They just don't want you to have depression because your life is not how you imagined it, just accept it, and change if you want, and you are not alone with it, there's always someone who understands you.

5. There are more important things in life than being grumpy about something irrelevant.

A familiar situation, I believe, when we make our own little dramas every single day just because why not. Who didn't take out the trash? Who left the dishes unwashed? Why isn't the house clean and nice? These are just some examples of things, that are not really important. If it's still there, you take it out. If it's not washed, you can wash it yourself, tell them to wash it next time - and it will only work if the other one understands that both of them has to do all kinds of things to make everything going around the family. But no drama, please.

6. Then what IS important in life?

Since I wrote so much aout what is not important, here's some that are: self-development, our place in the community, in the family, family itself, love, to have passion for something, the precious value of a single moment, happiness...
