Glowing jar project - varázslat a lakásban (EN/HU)

Thank you for being here and looking at this old-old tutorial of mine! A lot has changed on this blog lately, why don't you go check it out after you learnt how to make your own jars? For one, I am making some free lootboxes (coloring pages, sticker packs etc.) on my patreon and posting daily illustrations on my instagram. :)

Since the above image is one of my 'most famous' photos, I've got a lot of requests on how I made these glowing jars. So, I decided to do a step-by-step tutorial for you. I hope it'll help to get yourself jars like these. :) The big 'secret' is about to unreveal. [sorry for the poor setting up of these images. I'm definetely not a tutorial-shooting guru.]

In general about this project / Általában erről a projectről:

I have a lot of mason jars. Small ones and bigger ones, but I think, big jars look more cute, and magical. It took me a long time to paint the middle jar (about 5-6 hours). Be careful with the paint, it's waterproof, so after it dried you may not be able to remove it from your clothes and furnitures. Be sure to wash your brush after using it with this paint!

  • Glowing paint / Világító festék (a linket eltávolítottam)
  • Paintbrush / Ecset
  • Some water / Kis víz
About the paint:
The one I used I bought in Hungary, and it's no longer available, sadly. However, I got suggested by some of my readers, that there're some good alternative options worldwide, and that I should post my referal link to amazon for these products :) So if you feel like supporting me with your purchase, please do use my codes, it doesn't mean you have to pay more in any way :) Here's the list of products I got suggestions for (updated sept 2020):

I will update this list with your suggestions, if you find something. Also, the EU links are missing, I need some more time to set those up. :)

Making of jars / Az elkészítés menete:

1. Wash your jar(s), and mix the paint with your brush to have the glowing particles evenly dissolved.

2. Make tiny dots in the inside of the jar. The more dots you make, the prettier the jar will look.

3. You're done. It's this easy. In daylight your jar won't look that fancy, but at night... it will make your room beautiful and cozy. Charge it with a lamp or with daylight and take it to a dark place!

  1. In the States, I get my paint from http://glowinc.com - they have both water based and solvent based paints, but I think you would want solvent based for this project.

    Thanks for sharing this!

  2. How funny! I emailed the store in Hungary that sells Poliglow paint (Yay! Google translator!) and they emailed me back right away and suggested this product!

  4. I tried this with some other type of paint from Michaels craft store here in the US, spent the whole weekend doing lil perfect dots and wasn't able to get any kind of vibrance like what I see in your pictures. I was so bummed. I am not giving up though! I am going to buy from the links you posted and give those a shot!!! Thanks for doing this tutorial! Its so nice when people are willing to share the magic of their craft and not be selfish. I love your work and am always oohing and aahhing. You need to do more of these! :-D

    1. I bought paint from Michaels, AC Moore and even a hobby shop an hour from where I live. I didn't want to have to buy paint offline, but to be honest it looks like the best way to go. I tried all three paints, and even tried second and third coats, nothing is as bright as this picture & the glows don't last as long either. Hope the paints of the website work!

  7. These jars would also look really interesting if there were small swirls randomly with the dots.

    VálaszTörlés
  8. These are amazing! I'm considering this project to add to the outdoor decor for my wedding reception. How long do you have to "charge" the jars with a lamp and roughly how long will they glow?

    VálaszTörlés
  9. Hey Kelly! These would look so nice on your wedding reception, if these would be the only light sources (if there is more light, they're not very vivid)! :) The thing is that they're glow for a long time(6-9 hours) after 'charging' for 2-3 hours. :) At least the Poliglow ones.

    VálaszTörlés
  10. There are a few spots at the reception site where these could be placed as the only light source. That's great they glow so long! I'll definitely be making some. Thank you so much!!

  12. Can anyone tell me how long the glow effect will last? Thinking of using this for a wedding. They are beautiful.

    VálaszTörlés
  13. Hey Kim! As I've said above to Kelly, it glows for 6-9 hours with the Poliglow paint and with 2-3 hours of charging. :)

    VálaszTörlés
  14. Would it work if you put the dots on the outside of the jar?

    VálaszTörlés
  15. I would think using a black light would also magnify the effects :)

  16. Will this paint work on clear plastic containers? Would love to make these for my small grandkids to play with on late summer evenings.

I'm curious how it would work if you thinned the paint down (with solvent or water) and swirled it around in the jar and turned the jars upside down and let them dry? The application would be diluted so I wonder how much the jars would "glow". Might have to try this experiment!

  43. I was wondering if it would be safe to put a tealight candle inside the jar after the paint dried?

    VálaszTörlés

  50. I bought Rustoleum glow in the dark paint. I made my dots and they were runny... sigh

    VálaszTörlés
  51. That is such an easy project. But has a look, as if it was more involved. Thanks

    VálaszTörlés
  52. Could you possibly put flowers in them during the day or something to make them look a little cute while they are not glowing? :)

    VálaszTörlés
  53. I would like to try this project combined with a mason jar light. On HGTV I saw where they cut off the bottom of mason jars (so the heat from the light bulb could escape), drilled a large hole in the screw-on tops, and inserted a light bulb fixture for about $4.50 per light. The lit bulbs would provide a light source when needed and would charge the glow in the dark paint. Turn off the light and let the paint glow when you want that effect. Our daughter wants to feature mason jars in her wedding decor, and I am thinking a design of their initials, some swirls, and dots. Thank you for the glowing idea!

    VálaszTörlés
  117. Akkor van egy világító ecseted? :)
Nevet váltott a gyártó, így a Poliglow termékek már Unikromglow néven futnak plusz pár színnel bővült a gyártó palettája. Mivel akrilfesték, ezért szerintem kültéren is megmarad.

I have two that are safely tucked away in my parents basement awaiting our reunion. When I learned that I would be having a child and building a nursery for him, I wanted a flokati. A gray one. Being a flokati snob though, I knew that I couldn’t afford the price tag ( a whole months rent ), and I knew that I would be too precious about the rug ( and be leary of the body fluids that babies seem to leak all over the place ). most gawked all-time When you bring food home from a grocery store, chances are you toss it in the fridge. Ever stop to wonder if that's your best move? People managed to store perishables before the era of refrigeration, and if you're imagining a root cellar full of cans and preserves, you're only partially right. Designer Jihyun Ryou has made it his mission to, er, preserve some of those old methods of preserving food, designing this minimalist system for the modern kitchen."We hand over the responsibility of taking care of food to the technology, the refrigerator," says Rhyou. 165. Dorothea Dahmlos2012. május 25. 19:17

Great tutorial. Love it. But the shipping is so expensive. Colour was 6 € and the shipping nearly 19 €. That is to mutch.

    VálaszTörlés

  168. Just a suggestion, do not use Martha Stewart's glow in the dark paint... I got the same like this product review: http://www.michaels.com/Glow-in-the-Dark-Acrylic-Paint/cp0474,default,pd.html

    Dorothea Dahmlos:
My German friend ordered four glow in the dark paints from the EU url. I tried the Glow Inc's one.
Her and my results are the same as the blogwrites.

Just a little counting with US vs. EU prices, four color glowing paints and the same size product :)

If I wanna do the SAME QUALITY like my German friend or the blogwriter got:
    - here in the U.S. I have to spend 4x$19.98 (eg 4x€16) + $10 shipping fee - the total is almost $90 (eg €70).
    - in EU: 4x€3,4 + with the €19 shipping fee: total €32

So the result is: the same quality in Europe is cheaper... with $90 in the EU I can buy 14 glow in the dark paints, here only just 4.

    VálaszTörlés
  169. I'm sorry - you said you used water-based paints? I'm asking because it seems acrylic-based would stick better to glass and also because the link to the shop directs to acrylic paints...?

    VálaszTörlés

    1. hey! no matter when you make them, the key is to charge them for enough time. (mines glow for about 5-6 hours after 2-3 hours of charging in full darkness) :)

    1. hey! well, i don't know exactly how much paint you need. i've bought 2 30 g paints, and i stillhave half of them. i've painted 2 huge jars (2-3 liters each), 6 medium size (0,5 liters each) and some little ones. i don't know, if it's enough help for you.

  180. FYI for all you folks who are looking to do this project on the cheap:

GloManiaUSA is NOT a good alternative. Their paint is not of the same quality as what was apparently used for frompankawithlove's jars. It glows only very dimly and lasts only about 10-20 minutes.

Learn from my fail, y'all. I went with them after seeing the crazy shipping costs of the recommended US paints in this blog post, but it was really not worth the disappointment. :(
